Sunday
I went to the Brighton Festival last night, staying at Polly Toynbee's, and return to London this morning. In the afternoon, I do some shopping and take a long walk. Dinner with Lord Falconer and his wife Marianne.
Monday
I'm lucky enough to see how the 2012 Olympics will be branded - it'll be revealed to the public next month. Then to a meeting to support Hazel Blears for her campaign as deputy leader. I then have to go to another meeting to ensure the Olympic stadium is delivered on time, that it comes within cost and that its legacy will be fantastic. Later, I attend a Labour Party dinner and meet a few friends.
Tuesday
Up at the crack of dawn to travel to Liverpool to speak about the central importance of the cultural Olympiad. Tonight, having held many more meetings, I meet the Liberal Democrats, who have concerns about the funding of the Olympics, and have a lovely dinner with the film director Anthony Minghella, who discusses ideas with me for a British Film Centre.
Wednesday
I visit the Barking Abbey school with Jim Knight, our education minister, to launch the second year of the school as our School for Sport Champions. They have had stunning sporting success and, as with so many sporting colleges, also an academic improvement. Later, there's Prime Minister's Questions, and afterwards I meet my PPS, Barbara Follett.
Thursday
After a few morning meetings, I fly to Nice for the Cannes Film Festival. I'm straight off to see the premiere of Control, the film about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. It's very moving and powerful. Tonight I am quite tired, so I have a drink in my hotel bar and an early night.
Friday
Breakfast with a few producers, hosted by the British Film Council. They brief me on British films and we talk about the new tax credit system which will encourage more productions of British film. For lunch, I have to meet sales agents to discuss what they can do for the British film industry in Cannes. I also have interviews with journalists and then meet the South African film minister to discuss a new UK and South African co-production deal. In the evening, I fly back to London - looking forward to going to the Cup Final at Wembley.
